Economics Guest Speaker Visit

virangeconomicsOn Thursday 14 December, Economics students at Walton High were privileged to have the company of Virang Dal, Head of Economics at Kent College.   Virang is more commonly known as ‘EconPlusDal’ from his Youtube channel which has over 41,000 subscribers. 43 students from Year 10 – Year 13 attended the talk and were given an insight into the fundamentals of Economics – choice and decision-making. There was also the opportunity for a Q&A session. Our students fielded questions about a range of topics including bitcoin, BREXIT, free market economics, subject combinations at degree level and exam technique.

Mr Dal was very impressed with Walton High students commenting that “the students have strong subject knowledge and asked some very thought provoking questions”. We look forwarded to welcoming Virang back to Walton High in the near future.

Cross Country Event at Campbell Park

On Wednesday 22nd November twenty-five Walton High students took part in the Cross Country event at Campbell Park.

Hannah Lord from our Brooklands campus put in a brilliant performance and came 3rd in the YR 8 & 9 girls race. Ellie McManus and Freya McManus also ran excellently and finished in the top 10.  The YR 7 boys race saw Kiyaan Khan finish 4th and Joel Pantsil cross the line in 5th place after a determined run by both students.

Everyone who took part represented our school in a remarkable way and showed great spirit on a cold day in November.

Well done!

Ethan Van Leeuwen

YR12 student, Ethan, has returned justifiably very happy from Prague, Czech Republic, where he represented England at the U17 2017 Badminton European Championships.

He won Silver in the Men’s Doubles and Bronze in the Team Event.

Ethan can be seen on court with his doubles partner and on the podium (second from left).

The success in the Men’s Doubles was particularly exciting, as it was not expected. He and his doubles partner were not seeded and far exceeded all expectations, by beating the 2th, 3th, 4th, 5th and 8th seeds before they eventually lost to France in the final.

This was Ethan’s first ever European Championships, which are held bi-annually. It is likely that in future, he will concentrate his focus on the Doubles game, as that is where his strengths lie.

There will now follow a period of training before major competitions start again in the spring of the new year.

Well done Ethan.
