Curriculum Intent

The English Curriculum Area at Walton High believes that every student has the potential to succeed in English lessons, and that this success will empower them to thrive in all aspects of life—academically, personally, and professionally. We aim to develop all students as confident proactive and reflective learners.

Our approach is grounded in five core philosophies:

  • All texts are constructs – Every text is a deliberate creation, shaped by choices in language, structure, and form. Understanding this helps students become critical and thoughtful readers and writers.
  • The English language is powerful – Language can be analysed, experimented with, and ultimately mastered. Through this, students gain the tools to express themselves with clarity, creativity, and confidence.
  • Active reading is transformative – Engaging deeply with texts enhances comprehension, critical thinking, and empathy, supporting achievement across all subjects and enriching personal growth.
  • Context creates connections – Understanding the historical, cultural, and social contexts in which texts are produced and received is essential to unlocking their full meaning and relevance.
  • Every voice matters – We value diverse perspectives and encourage students to find and develop their own voice, fostering a sense of identity, agency, and belonging.

At Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Language and Literature are taught as separate disciplines, with a different class teacher and exercise book for each subject.  At Key Stage 5 students may choose to study either English Literature or English Language and Literature A Level.

Set according to the school homework timetable, all homework tasks are specified by the class teacher to develop a wide range of academic and creatives skills. A programme of study support runs alongside lessons and all students are welcome to attend.

At Key Stage 3, we cultivate a love of reading through independent book choices and engagement with Sparx Reader. Each timetabled cycle of lessons includes a dedicated Read, Speak, Repeat lesson, offering students the chance to explore the library and participate in shared reading experiences that build confidence and community.

At Key Stage 4 and 5, our commitment to reading continues with carefully curated reading recommendations tailored to each stage. Through this, we ensure that the joy, depth, and discovery of reading remain central to the student experience, enriching minds and strengthening our school’s literary culture.

The Library is a hub for English enrichment with regular themed events designed to encourage appreciation of national literary initiatives and school based projects. We celebrate National Poetry Day, Non-Fiction November, World Book Day and many more throughout the academic year.

The curriculum is enhanced by a varied programme of enrichment. We regularly run trips to theatre performances of set texts, such as An Inspector Calls and Macbeth, attend Poetry Live Lectures with Year 11 students and author visits and workshops for all year groups provide a range of page to stage interpretations.

At Key Stage 3, students develop a strong foundation for GCSE study. They read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts including pre-1914 and contemporary prose, poetry and drama. Students develop their ability to write imaginatively and accurately for different purposes and audiences. A fortnightly Reading lesson allows students time to enjoy personal reading as well as pursuing individual and group reading projects.
