Geography
Curriculum Intent
The study of Geography at Walton High enables students to belong in a connected and ever-changing world. By exploring places, cultures and environments, students develop a sense of identity and understand where they belong in local, national, and global communities.
Our Geography curriculum inspires students to learn about the physical and human aspects of our planet to give them an appetite for the discovery of the World. Through engaging lessons and fieldwork opportunities, students learn how landscapes form, how societies adapt, and how they can contribute to a sustainable future. We encourage curiosity and critical thinking, ensuring that students learn how Geography shapes our world and their place within it. Our curriculum is constantly reviewed so that we engage our learners in relevant, interesting geographies.
Students learn a range of transferable skills to enable them to confidently face the opportunities and challenges of life beyond school. Central to the study of the subject is decision making, problem solving and evaluation, communication, empathy and independent study. As such, teaching and learning strategies are adopted that encourage questioning and critical thinking to enable students to develop informed and balanced viewpoints, whilst understanding the effects of their decisions. Place is also central to the study of Geography, so students learn essential fieldwork skills as part of our curriculum.
We are committed to helping all students achieve their full potential in Geography. Whether mastering map skills, interpreting data, or conducting geographical investigations, students are supported to achieve excellence. Our curriculum challenges students to ask questions, solve problems, and develop a deep understanding of global issues - enabling them to achieve success not only academically, but also as informed and responsible citizens.
Through Geography, students belong, learn and achieve, by studying a contemporary and evolving subject that equips them with the skills needed to establish their place in the World.
