Curriculum Intent
MFL Curriculum Intent Statement
Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is built around the belief that here at Walton High every student should feel a sense of belonging, be empowered to learn with curiosity and confidence, and be supported to achieve their full potential in a global context. This is why we offer every student at KS3 the opportunity to study two languages of their choice from French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin. We understand that every child has their own unique talents and passions. That’s why, while we encourage a love of language learning, we believe in giving students the freedom to focus on the areas where they thrive. For this reason, languages are offered as an option at GCSE.
A place to belong
Through the study of languages and cultures, students develop respect and a deeper understanding of the world around them. We celebrate linguistic diversity and encourage students to see themselves as global citizens who can connect meaningfully with others across cultures. We’re proud to support students who speak a home language in gaining formal recognition for their skills. Over the years, we’ve successfully guided many students through additional GCSEs in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish, Urdu, and more.
A place to learn
Our curriculum is designed to inspire a love of language learning and to build strong foundations in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students engage with real-world contexts, developing the skills to communicate effectively and confidently. We promote curiosity, resilience, and independence, encouraging students to take risks and embrace challenges in their learning journey.
Achieve
We are committed to high expectations and academic excellence. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4, preparing students for success in GCSE examinations and beyond. We provide enrichment opportunities such as language clubs, cultural events, and international trips to broaden horizons and raise aspirations. Every student is supported to achieve their personal best and to see the value of multilingualism in their future education, careers, and lives.
