Mathematics

Curriculum Intent

Mathematics at secondary level is a cornerstone of critical thinking and a gateway to wider academic and vocational success. At our school, we are committed to delivering a mathematics curriculum that is coherent, ambitious and accessible to all learners, regardless of starting point. Our intent is rooted in the principles of mastery, depth and fluency, empowering students to become confident, resilient and independent problem-solvers in an ever-changing world.

We aim to cultivate secure conceptual understanding by building logically and sequentially upon prior knowledge from Key Stage 2. Our curriculum ensures students develop fluency in fundamental operations, manipulate algebraic expressions and formulae, and engage with geometry, ratio, probability and statistics in meaningful contexts. Key mathematical vocabulary and representations are embedded to support reasoning, explanation and generalisation.

Reasoning and problem-solving are embedded at every stage, challenging students to make connections across topics and apply their learning in unfamiliar situations. We develop mathematical habits of mind, encouraging curiosity, perseverance, and precision. Mistakes are embraced as opportunities to learn and all pupils are supported to take part in rich mathematical dialogue and exploration.

We are committed to closing the attainment gap by providing appropriate support and stretch. High-quality scaffolding, timely intervention, and targeted challenge allow all students to thrive and achieve. Mathematical learning extends beyond the classroom through enrichment opportunities, competitions and cross-curricular links that reveal the subject’s beauty, power and relevance.

By the end of Key Stage 4, our students will have developed the numeracy, critical reasoning and problem-solving skills necessary to succeed not just in assessments, but in further education, employment, and everyday life. They will leave with the confidence to engage with mathematics as informed, analytical citizens.
