Curriculum Intent

 Religion, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE) at Walton High aims to support all students to establish a sense of belonging in the world, the school environment and in the local community. We aim to provide a broad curriculum examining religious beliefs and non-religious worldviews, enabling students to explore their own beliefs and those of others. By developing a feeling of empathy and respect through the diverse study of worldviews, RPE intends for students to be able to take their knowledge of human beliefs into their life beyond Walton High. 

Students will secure lifelong skills of empathy and respect, alongside practicing their ability to think critically and be confident in expressing their opinions with justification. Lesson content will help to develop a sense of curiosity and collective responsibility. Core skill development includes communication, interpretation, analysis and understanding the perspective of others. Each of these skills provide students with opportunities to thrive in and beyond their school life as this skill toolkit is transferrable and useful in their future working and personal lives. Example fields in which the skills learned in RPE are useful are law, public service and medicine and compliment STEM subject areas offering a well-rounded set of subject specialisation.  

To enrich the lives of students, visits have been planned in the local community and will feature the opportunity to communicate with people holding a range of faiths and beliefs. Once again, this helps reinforce and allows students to practice the skills they have learnt in class.  

It is important that young people understand the importance of religion, philosophy and ethics as each pillar of the subject area enables them to go on to contribute positively to a multi-cultural society. Through studying the curriculum, students will gain a deeper respect and appreciation for others whilst finding their own place in the world, becoming conscientious and responsible adults.
